For the past 5 months, Goofball Games has been working with Area/Code Inc. on the development of Kingdom Keepers Online, which launched on April 6. The game is based on the popular book series by Ridley Pearson and launches in conjunction with the third book in the series.
Goofball Games worked on the server side portion of the game, creating the roguelike gameplay of 2,500 levels. The levels are generated based on heuristics that define easy, medium and hard levels, such as the placement and number of towers and tunnels, and can be regenerated at any given time to create all new levels with completely different layouts. The backend system also allows the admin to hand craft the creeps on each level by dictating which type of creep should appear when. This flexibility allows for very detailed control and design of levels to increase the fun factor throughout the game.
